At seventeen, Rick Albright left his home, his parents and even his old name, rather than pretend to be straight. But being on his own was hard. When his big brother Sam found him, and insisted on giving him a place to stay, he didn't resist too long. Living with Sam is better than fighting just to survive, but it's not easy to find his balance in a simple, small-town life, after his time on the streets.

Travis Brinkerhoff finally managed to come out in college, his second year anyway. It was the one bright side to losing his baseball scholarship and jock status. But without money for tuition, second year came to an abrupt end. He's back in his small Minnesota hometown, and back in the closet. Travis feels like he's trying to fit into a life he's outgrown. If he's going to survive, he has to figure out a way to be his own man, maybe even have his own man, without losing the family he loves.

When he left the Marines, Sam Albright wanted nothing more than to find his missing younger brother. Mission accomplished. Now he's got an independent, possibly traumatized, openly gay young man on his hands, a girlfriend in a war zone overseas, and parents he has to lie to in order to keep the peace. Keeping it all together won't be easy, but Sam has never backed away from a challenge.

I like this author and her style of writing, although there were a few places where I had a hard time comprehending what was happening. It almost felt like a few paragraphs were missing here and there and the continuity of the story was compromised because of that. The characters were a mixed bag - I liked them all, although Rick was defiant and immature just for the heck of it -even when it would have been in his own best interest to be more subtle and congenial. Travis's personality was never fully developed and seemed way too introverted to be a good match for Rick. I felt the book ended without a resolution to several plots that were developing. I would have liked more of the Sam and Dora story - what happened to them? And how did Rick and Travis deal with their serodiscordant relationship? What about the weddings? What happened with Travis's family in the aftermath of his HIV disclosure? I felt this cheated at the end of this book - too much unfinished business. I hope there is a Book 3 in the works to tie everything together.

Most of the problems with this book stem from the characters. Sam - I understand he was a Marine, but he still seemed too stiff to me. Travis - too much of a pushover. Dora (Sam's fiance) - I don't know what it was, but I never liked her. Then when she came home with the snippy attitude and slick mouth, that did nothing to endear her to me. Sam supposedly loved her "spunk" so I guess that's all that matters. Rick - an absolute jerk from beginning (Book 1) to end. I understood him running away, but why the constant name changes if you have no money, job, credit, assets or bank account? That made me think he was a little off his rocker. Why did he have such a nasty attitude towards Sam, who had never done anything but be his protector? And towards Sam's other family, when they were giving him & Sam a place to stay? I was unable to like him at any point in the story. And when Travis & Rick went to get tested, those results, REALLY? Rick gets chlamydia, after all that s**t he'd done, and Travis gets with 1 trashy girl and HE gets HIV? I mean, I know it's possible, but REALLY? I just didn't like this one at all. It wasn't as good as Book 1. I only made myself finish it because I'd paid for it and wanted to know what happened to Sam & Rick. Now I wish hadn't cared.
This second book is not an easy read but a must read because of the depth in the issues it deal with. This is Rick's, Travis and Sam's stories. Told from these guys' POV the beginning is a bit annoying because of the POV switch by chapters. But this changes as the plot reveal the issues Rick and Travis have to face. I have to say I did not see it coming for Travis. So darn unfair and my heart aches for this character but applaud the writer for doing it because it is all so real. I started off impatient with Rick and Travis as these young men navigate their attraction and budding romance. Personally I could do away with some of their sex scenes which fortunately are mitigated due to the length of the book. My favorite character is Sam and darn it he is a straight guy in this MM genre I love. I found myself loving his relationship with Dora. Mind you I would not mind reading a 3rd book focusing on Sam and Dora and this is saying alot as I have stop reading het romance for years. This is a well written, relevant story with so much depth dealing with difficult issues. I come away sad but hopeful for these guys. I just wish these biological parents could have been better people because these two boys deserve it. Well done Kaje Harper and please give us a 3rd book on these family members connected by love, respect and need and not by blood.
"The Family We Make" is, perhaps, just a touch melodramatic. Doesn't matter. The book is so authentically heartfelt and, ultimately, deeply moving, that even the melodrama seems exactly right.

Rick (real name, Clint, but he keeps changing it) starts out just as he's being rescued from the streets by his recently-former-Marine big brother, Sam. Rick was driven out of his home when he came out to his parents. They didn't beat him, or even disown him, they just screamed and yelled at him and threatened to send him to one of those religious reparative-therapy fraud mills.

He ran, as fast as he could. He ended up living on the streets in cities in Texas, Kansas, and even Idaho, trading sex for a roof over his head or a ride to the next town. He was near starvation and out of options when he finally called his brother to come get him. Fortunately, Sam (who has seen his share of sorrow in both Iraq and Afghanistan) doesn't judge Rick. He just wants him safe and cared for. Thus, he becomes the father Rick deserved, but didn't get. A surrogate father, even a brother acting as one, is infinitely better than a child condemned by his self-righteous and disgusted parents and drifting, without support, across a landscape of poverty and exploitation.

In the wilds of Minnesota, just outside a small town, Sam finds work fixing heavy equipment for a miraculous older guy, Jeff, who lost his wife and child to illness and recently suffered the loss of his best friend and business partner. While working on a program that offers assistance to the elderly, Rick meets the baseball prodigy/hometown boy (closeted, I must add) and a very tenuous relationship develops.

As in any good gay romance, obstacles abound family problems for both boys, condemning churches and HIV, just to name a few. These boys really have mountains to climb. Even the decidedly heterosexual (though accepting) Sam has to deal with a major problem with the girl he loves, still "defending democracy" in Afghanistan.

But the book is simply so well-written that what might be embarrassing melodrama in the hands of a lesser writer always feels authentic and your heart goes out to these bedeviled, but strong and admirable young people as they create their own family.

There were times I laughed, and more than one moment I cried. I'm almost ashamed to admit that, for the first time, a heterosexual love scene moved me to tears - I'm a gay man, and that's not really my "thing". The love between Sam and Dora is so perfect that you'd have to be inhuman not to celebrate it.

Kaje Harper has pulled all the stops out, and done so with some first-rate writing and a pure heart. I thank her, and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be moved by the human condition.
